Artificial Christmas trees are packed tightly for shipping and can look flat or sparse when first assembled. Fluffing means separating and spreading every small foliage tip by hand to bring out the tree’s shape and fullness.
Opening the main branches is only the first step — the smaller tips need shaping too.

Before and after fluffing: spreading each tip helps turn compressed branches into a fuller, natural-looking tree.
🎁 Before You Begin
Follow the supplied assembly instructions for your tree model.
Already assembled? Fluff it in place, starting at the bottom.
- Allow enough time: allow around 1.5–2 hours for a first 7FT setup. Larger or denser trees may take longer.
- Wear gloves and a long-sleeve shirt to protect against scratches.
- Work in good lighting so you can see the tips and gaps clearly.
- Keep a vacuum or brush nearby. Some light shedding of loose needles or flocking is normal during unboxing and fluffing, especially with snow-flocked trees.
🧩 Step 1: Assemble the Stand & Base
- Open the stand fully on a flat, level surface.
- Insert the bottom section of the tree pole fully into the stand.
- Hold the pole upright. Tighten each adjustment screw a little in turn, working around the stand until secure.
- Check that the pole is centred and the stand is steady.

Start with a stable base: tighten each screw a little at a time, working around the stand to keep the trunk centred and secure.
🌿 Step 2: Open the Branches & Fan Out Every Tip
Start with the bottom section and open its main branches:
- Hinged branches: gently lower them into position.
- Detachable branches: match each branch to its labelled or colour-coded slot.
Each small foliage sprig is a tip. Support the branch and gently shape each tip’s flexible stem by hand. Avoid tugging on the foliage or bending the stems too sharply.
- Start near the trunk and separate any tightly packed tips.
- Fan the tips in different directions: up, out and sideways.
- Work towards the branch end. Repeat on every branch.

Follow this simple 4-step fan-out method to shape each branch evenly for a lush, realistic finish.
🌲 Step 3: Fill the Gaps Between Branches
Spread the smaller side branches, then angle their tips into gaps between neighbouring branches and the layers above and below.
- Point tips up, down, sideways and diagonally towards open spaces.
- Vary their angles and depth for natural, overlapping coverage.

Fan the tips up, out and diagonally to fill gaps between neighbouring branches and layers for a fuller, natural look.
🧱 Step 4: Shape One Section at a Time
- Finish fluffing the bottom section before adding the next.
- Add and fluff the middle section, shaping every tip.
- Shape the top section within easy reach, then fit it to the tree.
For pre-lit trees: Switch off and unplug the tree before connecting or disconnecting sections. Connect each section’s lights as you add it, following the supplied manual. Do not use lighting with damaged cords or exposed wires.

Fluff each section before adding the next, then shape and fit the top for an even, natural finish.
👀 Step 5: Check the Shape
Step back and look at the tree from different angles. Adjust sparse areas by repositioning nearby tips to fill the gaps.
Aim for a balanced outline with natural depth. Small gaps can remain; the finished shape and fullness depend on your tree’s design.
💡 Step 6: Test the Lights (If Pre-Lit)
Test the lights before decorating. If a section does not light up, switch the power off and check its connections following the manual.
✨ Final Decorating Tips
For an unlit tree, add lights first, weaving them from the inside out. Then add garlands, ornaments and your topper. Leave enough ceiling clearance for your chosen topper.
Tree leaning? Have one person hold the trunk upright while another readjusts the stand screws evenly, a little at a time, until centred and secure.
Christmas Tree Fluffing FAQs
Why does my Christmas tree still look sparse?
Check for clumped tips near the trunk and between layers. Spread them towards nearby gaps. Fullness also depends on your tree’s design.
How long does it take to fluff a Christmas tree?
Allow around 1.5–2 hours for a first 7FT setup; larger or denser trees may take longer. Future setups usually need less shaping, especially if the branches have been stored gently.
Still need help? If large bare areas remain after shaping every tip, send us a full-tree photo and a close-up of the affected area so we can help check the setup.
